The soul of this place
Around 290 years ago the murti of Lord Narsinghji was installed in a pre-existing haveli that still frames the shrine in traditional Gujarati wooden architecture — carved brackets, chowks, and narrow balconies. The pol itself once bore older names (Vanik ni Pol, then Madan Mohanji ni Pol) before becoming Narsinghji ni Pol in the 18th century. The temple also houses a sacred shaligram, traditionally said to have been gifted to the custodians by a siddha from the outskirts of Baroda State.
Special details
Age & style: About 290 years old; one of Vadodara’s best-preserved Gujarati haveli-style Vaishnava shrines. Royal patronage: Deeply revered by the Gaekwad family of Baroda. Maharaja Anandrao Gaekwad endowed annual upkeep (including a perpetual ghee lamp); Maharaja Khanderao Gaekwad II commissioned the Deepmala in the 1860s — royals are said not to have dined until they saw its lamp burning from Sarkarwada. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, after a perilous sea voyage, is remembered for coming first to Narsinghji before the palace. Narsinhji no Varghodo (Dev Diwali / Kartik Poornima): For over 280 years Baroda has celebrated the symbolic wedding of Lord Narsinhji with Tulsi Devi. A flower- and jewellery-adorned palki carrying the Shaligram form of the Lord is borne on devotees’ shoulders through the old city to Tulsiwada for the vivah. Bhajans, dance, and dense pol crowds mark the night. Local tradition recalls that once the palki would not lift — even with dozens of bearers — until a smaller omitted Shaligram was placed inside; then it rose lightly, underscoring that every ritual element belongs in the procession. Deity: Śrī Narsinghji (Narasimha) with Tulsi Vivah tradition; shaligram also worshipped in the sanctum.
